This is a follow up to last week's post on the Lost season premiere. I've got a theory - it's crazy but hey, it's probably no crazier than anyone else's. First though, some housekeeping.
First of all, I dedicate this post to Candyinsierras who worries that I must not have liked the show because I didn't say anything about it. Nope, I liked it - was just having computer trouble that night and by the next day was on to something else.
I also dedicate this to Steve Sensenig who thinks my blogging on lost is a desperate attempt at relevance and to Rey who is just cracking up over the whole thing and to Jon who gets the deep metaphysical resonance of Lost.
So to all of you and others here are a few random thoughts on lost.
First, the results of my poll - I asked who the audience thinks is most likely to bite the dust this season - drumroll please - Henry Gale is the clear winner, er loser. The top three vote getters were:
1. Henry Gale
2. Desmond
3. Jin
I do have to admit though, that my poll was flawed. However, as Terry Pruitt pointed out - Henry Gale is already dead:
But then again, it is pretty clear that real Henry Gale is dead since Said dug him up to prove that the man calling himself Henry Gale was a liar. Now if that is not toppsy -turvy.
So, it looks like we should be saying that it is Ben who is most likely to die.
Now, on to other stuff.
As to the first few minutes of last week's show - all I can say is "didn't see that coming." That was a shocker to find out about the village on the island. My only question is - how come Rousseau never saw the village - she's been there 16 years? Maybe the villagers were keeping an eye on her and were able to direct her away.
We now are on our way to an explanation of the bears we saw in the first season - they were in the cages inhabited by Kate and Sawyer. Still, we don't know why they were there, or how or why they got out.
We also have a bit of an explanation for the shark we saw in the water with the Dharma initiative logo on it. Remember that Jack was held captive in a chamber that is below the water. It's gotta be associated with some kind of aquarium like setup.
Which makes me wonder if they are not in some kind of enclosed environment. Wasn't there a scene at the end of last year where a snow globe played a prominent role? Seems to me I read someone somewhere over the last year saying there is some significance to that. I think it was the guys in the arctic who were somehow monitoring the island and somehow Desmond's girlfriend was involved.
And this brings me to my theory - maybe this is some kind of Truman show type of thing. Maybe they are all trapped in some kind of bubble - a snow globe type of thing where they are being monitored for whatever reason. It's got to be a pretty huge snow globe for them to get a plane into it, and whoever is in the Christof role is pretty sadistic to have killed off so many people.
While typing that I did a google search to see if anyone else has made the Truman Show connection and here is someone who has. She actually has lots of good info which, if it pans out, would indicate that the Christof role may be playing by the father of Desmond's old girlfriend. Also, this lady has soem great factoids which really stir the pot:
- We finally got a time and date for the crash: 922044:16. September 22, 2004, at 4:16 am.
- Libby was a blonde on the Island, a brunette in the hospital, and in Desmond's flashback, she was a redhead.
- Desmond's full name is Desmond David Hume. David Hume was also a philosopher.
- The Hurley-Bird is back.
- The hieroglyphics on the countdown indicator loosely translate to "death."
- Penelope's name could be a reference to Odysseus wife in the Iliad and the Odyssey. She faithfully waited 20 years for him to return after the Trojan War, despite constant pressure from other suitors
- We finally see the Pala Ferry mentioned in the Pearl Station training video.
- Sayid: "I don't know what is more disquieting: the fact that the rest of the statue is missing, or that it has four toes."
I'm especially intrigued to find out that Desmond's full name is Desmond David Hume. Now we have three famous philsophers on the island - David Hume, John Locke and Rousseau. Hmm . . .
I'm also intrigued with the link on Penelope and the Odyssey.
Well anyway, I'm going with the Truman Show theory for now but will be paying special attention to the philosophy angle and the Odyssey angle.
And oh yeah, from the previews, it looks like Sawyer gets Kate, at least for the time being - too bad for Jack.

I've had this idea in the back of my mind too. It makes sense, since in the first 5 minutes of the show, the Others are all in their houses doing things and they feel a huge rumble. It is after that that they step outside their homes and see the plane crashing. Perhaps the plane broke through some kind of force shield (or bubble or whatever) and caused the rumble. Also, keep in mind this.

Keep this link handy http://www.thelostexperience.com/ They have links to newspaper ads, websites and phone numbers that the production staff keeps dropping to increase the mystique that is The Lost Experience.

By the way, I asked everyone in my Sunday School class to vote Ben (a.k.a the impersonator of Henry Gale) to get the pink slip. They all said no. Teenagers!

I'll have to remember where I read/heard it, but I think the show's creators specifically denied any kind of Truman Show explanation. But my memory could be wrong ...

First, thanks for the link.
Was the time of the crash, local time, or GMT, because it was awful bright at 4am in the morning. I'd have to speculate that is was GMT, which (off the cuff) puts it at 4:00 pm (if they are just to the east of the IDL) roughly for splash down. Probably a bit more to the east, but there isn't a lot of room between the IDL and Aus.
To give a bit of a nudge to the 'snowglobe' theory, Benry's (Ben/Henry) directions to Michael on how to escape were very precise, and implied the only way out. So while maybe not a snowglobe, perhaps a Berumda Triangle like limbo.

I laughed SO hard when I read this, David!! I wasn't sure what you thought of my little jab on the previous post, and now I know! ;) Too much fun.
Thanks, too, for the blogroll link. That means a lot coming from you. Seriously. Not sure how long you've linked to me, but just saw it in my Technorati results.
Other than that, I have nothing to say about this because I don't watch Lost (we don't have TV anymore in our home), and know absolutely nothing about it. Y'all enjoy it, though. Maybe I'll learn something by reading about it here. hehe

Oh good. You are watching LOST! Thanks for the dedication. I am more interested in the philosophy angle than the Truman Show angle. I also thought it was interesting that the discussion at the book club touched on free will.

How about Benry's name: Benjamin Linus. An analogy to Benjamin Frankin. But Linus? Linus Pauling? How does that work. If the Others are experimenting with or involved with diseases, then it may make sense to have a medical analogy to Linus Pauling. A friend's site has a lot of news and a Clues blog at LostExposed.com.

This is the first post of yours that I've seen since I just linked over here from TruePravda so you may have mentioned this before, but the Lostpedia has tons of information and theories on what's happening. You can find it at http://lostpedia.com/wiki/Main_Page. I read a bunch of good information about the "monitoring post" in the artic (or Antarctica). You can find it at http://lostpedia.com/wiki/The_Listening_Station. It's fun reading.

Jimmy Kimmel mentioned on his show several months ago...if not a year ago by now...his theory that Lost is a Truman-Show, Big-Brother reality show.

If you want a coherent explanation for Lost. Check out www.goodtheoriesforlost.com. You'll get no Philadelphia Theory in Twelve dimensions. Just St. Barbara, Superman and Crows.
