OK - I just got my "Lost" fix for the evening. Another good show and I'm further and further away from knowing what is going on. I went to some of the boards on ABC to see what folks are saying and here's a theory that I like:
I haven't read this theory yet so here goes. Locke has made statements referring the island as a person or sentient entity. His statements:There are several things about this theory that I like and there have also been a few comments lately that make me lean more and more to the purgatory theory. I don't know how they connect, but then I guess that's the object for the writers."The island wants to give you something"
"I've seen the eye of the island and its beautiful"I think Locke is the island's ambassador in this show. Locke is the island's mouthpiece. If the island could talk this is what it would say. The island wants to help people and is using Locke to do it. How has Locke helped people:
1. Found lost dog for Walt improving father-son relations.
2. Helped get Charlie off drugs, returned guitar.
3. Encouraged Jack to be a leader. He then finds water. This theory can be interpreted literally of figuratively:
1. LITERAL - the island really is alive.
2. SYMBOLIC - the island is not really alive but Locke has become so enthralled with the island that he is behaving as if it were so.
3. SYMBOLIC - the writers have intentially put in this idea but do intend for a literal translation.
As to Locke being an emissary for the island I go back to my prior post in which I quoted one of the producers talking about the polar bear and the connection of the show to the comic - Green Lantern/Flash: Faster Friends. The producer said:
The comic is actually a Spanish translation of "Green Lantern/Flash: Faster Friends," Part 1 which chronicles the superheroes attack on an alien that turns out to be peaceful. Says Abrams, "We definitely chose that story for a reason."I'm guessing that either the island or the monster is the alien that is peaceful. This would explain Locke's statement that he has looked into the eye of the island and it is beautiful. Also, in the summary of the comic that I posted here, we find that the comic is about:
About fifty years ago an alien spacecraft fell to Earth and in the interests of "national security" the Flash (Jay Garrick) and the Green Lantern (Alan Scott) were called in to eliminate the threat. The connection here would be that the plane that crashed 16 years ago is like the alien spacecraft and somehow the monster has to be connected to that. This is where I hit a wall - I can't figure out any more of the connections.
However, Locke has made some kind of contact with the monster or alien and since it is probably peaceful after all, Locke could be his emissary. What I don't get is, if the monster/alien turns out to be peaceful, why did it kill the pilot in the first episode.
Also, getting back to the purgatory theory, Sayid made some comments tonight to Kate to the effect that there is no reason that they should be alive, given the kind of crash they endured. He wonders why they all walked away without a scratch. Hmmm . . . .
Anyway, once again I'm probably giving too much thought to a TV show, but this sure is a fun show to get wrapped up in.
Anybody know what happened to the pregnant gal?

Just a note. The 'monster' hasn't been seen since Locke's encounter with it face to face...
And it isn't clear, at least to me that the monster killed the pilot...
This episode, the first rumble happened when Charlie roared 'Rock God'...
The polar bear comic is shown, and then Michael encounters a polar bear later...
there is significant foreshadowing in each episode...
Who clocked Saheed? I think I remember kahki pants, like Locke's...

Well the French woman's message is significant, especially the part about "it killed them one by one until they were all dead" or something similar.
So far, besides their surviving the crash, the only one healed has been Locke.
Didn't anyone notice how the moth showed the way out. It was almost spiritual, the way Charlie came up out of the ground, like being born/reborn. Of course he was, breaking away from the drugs and becoming a hero with real friends for the first time in his life.
There is a redemption/destiny/fulfillment aspect to all of this--Charlie, Locke, Doc, and the black father who got to be a hero to his son by knowing what to do at the caves.
I really like the effective way they weave in the character's history into the storyline as they deal with the issues that are exposed.

Dan - in a snarky way... ala Television Without Pity... the producers had to figure a way to reduce the speaking parts on this episode so they didn't have to pay them.
Boone and Shannon weren't in last episode, I expect we will see Claire (the pregnant lady) in the next episode.

Why did the monster kill the pilot?
I think there are more than one force at work here! I still can't put my finger on what the heck the island is all about though. What a show, eh? When I watch it I can't do anything else. Hoping for more Lost blogging in the future. :)

1st, i reject the purgatory theory. it is such an old played out scenario that i don't wanna believe that's wut it could b. given abc's extreme political correctness i think the island is the home of polynesian gods, kinda south pacific mt olympus. the last group was probably killed 'cause they angered them with their conservative european ways. they healed locke 2 use as their spokesman. all the protected groups(including the fat guy) and the touchy-feely anglos will be saved after they have learned 2 b as 1 w/ mother gaia. charlie will reject catholicism and embrace the paganism of the islands. the baby will b born with the spirit of the gods/island in her. yes, i strongly believe the baby is a girl. we will find out kate killed her husband (but that's ok). and isn't interesting that a former enemy, sayid, is their hero/savior/tech support.(as an aside i saw 2day in boston protesters hoping 4 'victory for the resistance in iraq'). i'm trying 2 figure out which guy will turn out 2 b gay; jack, charlie, jin, michael?

i think that the plane has gone threw a time warp and the monster and polar bear are prehistoric creatures. the french lady could have gone threw it also. they could be traveling at warp speed threw the time warp and that's why we haven't seen the monster anymore (dinosaur?).
just a thought but it could work and that could be why nobody has picked up the distree code(no way to pick up signal).

i'm going to add to "lostfan's" theory. the pilot said that they were going back to Figi. I don't see how they could have gone back in time unless they met with some force. There could be something like the Figi Triangle. The bermuda Triangle is known to have had some strange occurances. i'm just putting the idea out but the more i think about it the more realistic it becomes!

I know i'm a little late to the table, but i was searching around for the translated text from the comic page shown in this episode but couldn't find it anywhere (i guess i could just have bought the comic in english). anyway, the actual text shown refers to being "controlled like puppets" and that the puppet master (the alien they're talking to) is dying from any number of diseases.
i don't know if it means much, but it seesm to help various theories.

I think it's some sort of experiment be it governmental or??? Ever seen Total Recall or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind or The Manchurian Candidate? It is some sort of mind thing. They mess with your memory/experiences in your head but they aren't actually happening to you in the physical, you just don't know. Or, next theory: First episode of season 2 has the guy in the hatch. Notice all his cool technology is actually quite outdated (check out the dos computer, record player, old music, reel to reel versus digital technology). He is like the guy conducting some sort of experiment that gets crashed so he's trying to freak the people off the island. The monster seems more like a machine. On the season finale Locke gets almost pulled into the ground and it sounds more like a chain pulley or something than a monster... Endless theories...

I feel the purgatory theory may be correct, as for the 10th episode in the second series, it shows u the black cloud, it kinda gives u the idea of the devil, or a bad force trying to take the religious coloured guy, but it cannot succeed as he has done to much good in his life to go to 'hell' so to speak.
MY view... They crash, the ones that already died have met they're match, hell or heaven, now they are in purgatory, as their fate has not yet been decided, and on the island, all the 'good' people die in a way that doesnt include the smoke, and all the people that have commited unforgivable sins, or whateva s*it will b taken away by the black mist, however i'm wondering why, if locke has bin such a simaritan, should the mist, or chains, whateva u wanna call it, would try to take him into the ground??? too many theory's but thats part of the series i guess to keep u on ur toes, and get everyone involved it's smart!

I think they've gone through the Bermuda Triangle and that's why they can't get a signal and no one knows where they are. The Triangle could be a force which makes planes over it crash, and the monster and the others make sure the survivors can't get off the island, which is why people who go into the Bermuda Triagle never come out. I know that's not what happens in the Bermuda Triangle in real-life, but it could be Lost's view of it. Just a theory.

I think "Lost" is a political satire in the style of "Gulliver's Travels" where the basic story has a hidden meaning to do with politics and religion. This is the way I see it: Jack is American Democrats; Sawyer is American Republicans; Kate is the American public trying to decide between the two; Ana Lucia is American ethnic minorities; Mr Eko is Africa; Charlie is British government; Sayid is British ethnic minorities; Claire is old nations (e.g. Australia) of British Commonwealth, and her baby represents new nations of Commonwealth; John Locke is the United Nations; Rousseau (aptly French) represents the European Union, especially European foreign policy; Hurley represents the Pacific region; Sun & Jin are the far East (Sun more Western-looking, Jin more traditional); the Dharma Initiative represents religion; the entering of a sequence of numbers into a computer at regular intervals represents religious faith, observance & tradition; and, the Others represent cruelty, intolerance & repression in government generally. There are some additional characters I have not mentioned but I am sure they all fit into the jigsaw somewhere, e.g. Michael could be non-aligned. Anyway I think no-one needs to speculate about how the series will end, the important thing is what it all represents and what is the hidden message to do with our society, history, religion and global politics.
