I found a new blog that is going into my rss reader called City of God. Here's a good quote from Lauren Winner about the disjunction between weddings and marriage. This is apropos for me since I have just picked up two couples for pre-marital counseling, and I agree with what she says here:
In an article for The Cresset, Lauren Winner writes of the confused logic of the modern wedding. The problem with modern weddings is not the fact that they are celebrations. The problem is with how they are celebrated. Weddings are glamorous fantasies. But what marriage is glamorous? There is a serious disjuncture between weddings and the marriages they make. Winner writes that her marriage is complicated and hard, realities which weddings conveniently ignore.

And a lot of marriages these days don't even last until the bills from The Wedding are paid off. ("Just a cozy little wedding -- like Princess Di had.")
I think it's because they put so much time and energy (and themselves) into The Wedding Day that they have none left for the marriage afterwards.

David,
Honestly, I've got to wonder about the intelligence of anyone who goes into a marriage thinking that every day will be like their wedding day. I've also got to question pundits who question the glamor of weddings. Let them be glamorous (within reason)! Why not have fun with the day?
Heck, who ARE these people?

I don't think there's anything wrong with celebrating one of life's most important events. It *should* be celebrated! The trouble is that, today, many weddings are (I hate to say it) jokes. The fairy-tale fantasy aspect takes top priority, usually occurring after the couple has already acted married (i.e., had sex and cohabitated, or even had kids. Should a non-virgin bride wear white?) Many marriages are entered into not "until death do us part" but "until I can't stand you any more."

I've yet to marry, but I think alot about it. I just want us both to be sure we have unpacked whatever baggage we may have. Pastor Tommy Nelson has a beautiful teaching on the Song of Solomon I highly recommend. I would like to a find just a few married couples I respect who actually have done it right to help counsel ,that's all I ask. A healthy church and we'll be on our way.

When you view this video, you will see what the illicit sexual battles being faced by the church today are really all about. The fact is, it is not really only a physical battle, but more importantly, an ultimate type of spiritual battle that is transpiring.
Sincerely,
