Yeah, Steve Spurrier may have irked some of us Gators for going to another SEC team, but as long as we keep beating them I'll be fine. When Spurrier was at Florida we all knew he was a jerk and irritated people, but he was our jerk, and we cried about it all the way to several SEC championships and a national title. He's still irritating people today and he has a certain panache about it that just always cracks me up.
The latest involves his response to Georgia's whole-team celebration when they scored their first TD against the Gators this year. The whole team ran onto the field to celebrate and their coach Mark Richt said that before the game he had told the team that if they didn't get an excessive celebration penalty on their first TD he was going to be a might put-out with those gentlemen. Needless to say this has caused some controversy, what with a coach telling his guys to break the rules.
Spurrier was asked about this at a press conference and said that if that happened to him, he'd find some third stringer who will never play to go out there and take umbrage to the act, and get some pushing and shoving going on. Spurrier's take on this was that the Georgia players would gang up and beat his poor third stringer to a pulp. Apparently, the rules say that the combatants would be thrown out of the game and also banned from the next game. So, he figured he could sacrifice a third stringer and get the whole Georgia team thrown out.
Now, Herschel Walker has become a tad peeved at the old ball coach and has been shouting his mouth off and has actually challenged Spur-dog to a fight. You can read about it here. Spur-dog has no comment. But the commenters on that post have several and they crack me up for some of the names and derogatory comments they are calling Spurrier:
Yeah, good for Walker. Challenging a 62 year old man to a fight. Seems fair, right?
I love Walker and I can't stand Spurrier, but I think that it makes anyone look like an idiot when they challenge someone else to a fight.
(From a Gag-Me-U, er FSU, fan) Gotta agree with Lucky26, I HATE Spurrier, but this does make Walker look kind of ignorant. Really, though, who among us actually does NOT want to punch Spurrier. This is a tough one...
If you think Herschel is serious about fighting Spurrier, then your a bigger idiot than Masterof the Obvious. I wonder what classy program he cheers for.Obviously, Herschel's joking around. If you've ever heard speak, thats just his personality. Spurrier obviously knew it was a joke.
I watched the video where Spurrier made those statements and you would think that anyone who has ever watched him on TV would recognize the patented Spurrier smirk. He had the Spurrier smirk going through the whole interview and you could tell he was just trying to yank people's chains and he has done it. Regarding Herschel's challenge, Pat Dooley of the Gainesville Sun says this:
I'd have my money on Walker, but not if they gave Spurrier 10 minutes pre-bout to get into his head. It'd be like Hannibal Lecter and Miggs in "The Silence of the Lambs."
That's why I love him and he never fails to crack me up. The Great Visor can get under people's skins without even trying - it just comes so easy for him. He's an artist. He telegraphs his punches and still lands them every time.
I don't blame anyone for disliking Spurrier, but you have to admit, college football would be boring without him.

Jolly, I still have a special place in my heart for the ole' ball coach too...
Tebow for Heisman!
Go Gators!

"The Great Visor" LOL!!!
I still think Coach Richt was wrong to encourage his players to be so blatant in their disregard for the rules. I must add, however, that I think it is a stupid rule. At least in the way it is enforced.

Spurrier better watch out -- the Chicken Curse might get him.

And what about the Steve Spurrier Digiorno Pizza commercial? Pairing him up in that with Washington coach (and possibly the most soft-spoken human being on the face of the earth) Ty Willingham was a masterful stroke...hands down one of the funniest commercials I have ever seen!!!
